      Does media determine our Agenda?

As media determines the freedom of a particular nation, ‘mediakracy’ would mean freedom of the media. Media today has become an essential phenomenon in our lives. It would be impossible for all of us to survive without media or different forms of media. In today’s era, media is an essential tool that determines everything. Media determines how happy we are, it determines what we need to do for the entire weekend, how lucky can a number be for us, how  is our heath this week and all of that stuff.
Also the most interesting part being on social networking sites is that, the applications there can determine how happy you are!! Strange! The consumption of media today is more than what it used to be in the past. Agenda setting here plays an important part in determining what has to be seen and what not. The agenda of media is set not on what people want but on what the news organizations want to show! More precisely we see what they want us to see... Certainly, it is us, the common man who are dominated by the media today which was not the case a decade before. We are so engrossed with the television sets that we see what the media wants us to see. In short, we don’t have a choice. We live in a mediacratic world where we have no time to sit back and ponder on what is being shown by media. In our busy schedule we hardly get time to analyze things. So we are bound to follow whatever the media says or does! On the other hand, media is becoming violent too and that could be seen in Anna Hazare’s movement, IAC campaign, etc. News is what the media desires for! Media needs something that it would show for hours together. We can figure it out by the news that was shown in past and the news that is shown today! Earlier there were no advertisements but today it’s vice versa. In my opinion I feel “Strike when the iron is hot” is the proverb that media houses follow.
This is the way media works! So yes! We live in a Mediacratic society!
Some really aspiring and inspirational quotes:

The quote says that a developed country is the country where the rich travel by public transport not by how the poors travel in cars and this is quite apt for a developing country like India where the economy is still growing, where the rich become richer and the poor become  poorer!

This is yet another best example of good advertising!

IAC: a blessing or a curse:

Corruption prevails even now! The only thing that Anna and his team have done is gained publicity with introducing “a missed call for supporting Anna” and has also gained grounds on the social networking sites where the IAC page on facebook got 2,88, 491 likes which again influences people and cultivates ideas that what they are doing is very apt and this would bring change in the system which never happens. The IAC is formed just to influence people and make a party of their own so that they could make money like other parties have kept doing!

Is the IAC (India Against Corruption) campaign genuine?

This is a very interesting topic yet again after the dynamic feedback that people gave to Anna’s unending fast at Jantar Mantar. Citing the campaign, led by Anna Hazare, as an example of the impact of WikiLeaks cables, Julian Assange, the chief of the whistle-blower WikiLeaks said what was happening in India was “Something that has not happened since the time of Gandhi.”  The IAC (India Against Corruption) campaign was aimed to gather more of support for making a strong Lokpal Bill basically referred to as “Jan Lokpal Bil”. People of the entire nation came together to fight for corruption and people started marching on streets all over the nation on a call to stop corruption. Moreover instead of talking about the progress India has made, the IAC always came up with issues of scams and everything that hampered the growth of the country.

The fact that Anna and his team are fighting against corruption makes people think that they are set free from half of their problems related to corruption. They feel people have sooner or later realized that it’s high time to get the country developing but on the contrary common people fail to understand as to why was this team formed?
What are the motives of the team in making a party, etc. The motto of the IAC campaign was to gain support from people across the nation and form a party to abolish corruption and also formulate the Lokpal Bill. Common people fail to understand that these are fake manipulators with their hidden agendas who would show their true colours and how corrupt they are when they form their political parties. Here we can talk about Agenda Setting and this example clearly sites the impact that agenda setting has on common people. The agenda that was set by the Anna‘s team was followed by the people of the entire country. Also there is persuasion that comes into picture where this topic is concerned. People are persuaded to listen and follow the news and believe that the Anna team is right and whatever the team does is for the betterment of the country.

It looks like Anna and his team has no intention and courage to fight against corruption and India’s corrupt system and as we all know, corruption can’t be stopped in a country like India where leaders and political parties survive on black money. The intention of the team is just to be in news and grab attention. People went mad at Anna’s initiative at first but later everything was back to square one. The support for Anna was seen the way people uploaded their face book statuses, tweets , people on streets, people talking about it in local trains, people wearing the Anna cap and what not. But the situation of abolishing corruption remains the same. As it was, it is even now!

Analysing Impact of Violence —How does it affect families, children and youngsters:

While violence is not new to the human race, it is an increasing problem in modern society. Violence can be defined in many ways. The World Health Organization (WHO) promotes a broad definition of violence. With great inventions and new technological advancements, the impact of violence is increasing considerably.

The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death or psychological harm.
This topic deals with how violence affects the behavior of family members, youngsters and children of all age groups. Impact of violence is observed almost everywhere in and around us.

There are many types of violence that are commonly found:

1. Physical Violence (Domestic violence)
2. Psychological Violence
3. Self- Directed Violence (Harming one’s own self)
4. Violent Video games that affect the behavior of children
5. Violence in families because of movies and television programmes.

Violence can be of many types; the basic ones being Physical violence normally referred to as Domestic Violence where one or more episodes of aggressive behavior, usually resulting in physical injury with possible damage to internal organs, sense organs, the central nervous system, or the musculoskeletal system of another person.
Then comes psychological violence which comprises of  Emotional abuse, mental abuse A form of mistreatment in which there is intent to cause mental or emotional pain or injury; Psychological violence  includes verbal aggression, statements intended to humiliate or infantilize and  insults and results in stress, social withdrawal, long-term   depression. Then comes Self-directed violence which includes suicidal behavior and self-harm.
The effect of violence on children is observed when they become aggressive and arrogant. Playing video games brings in a great deal of aggression in the mind of the children and directly affect them leading them to behave in an arrogant manner.  If there is domestic violence in a family, the child feels himself responsible for it they do not understand that it is a problem between the adults. They might feel that parents are fighting because their school performance, fighting with siblings etc. Family violence often leaves the child with a feeling of confusion in particular when they feel close to both parents. Their feelings of love and affection towards both parents conflicts with what is happing between them
Today 99% of the houses in India have televisions be it anyone, from the rich to the poorest... Over quarter of all children who have a well-to-do of family background have a television set in their bedrooms. This gives a greater opportunity for children to view programs without parental supervision. Studies reveal that children watch approximately 28 hours of television a week, more time than they spend in school when they have separate bedrooms of their own.

Some researchers have demonstrated that young children imitate aggressive acts that that see on television serial and talk about it with peers. Before age 4, children are unable to make a difference between fact and fantasy and may view violence as an ordinary occurrence. In general, violence on television and in movies often conveys a model of conflict that gives rise to aggression. Heroes are violent, and, as such, are rewarded for their behavior. They become role models for youth.

Violence is observed almost everywhere. Be it local trains, be it ticket queue or be it in schools, colleges, etc. We all fall a prey to such kind of violence.

The definition should be understood to include physical, sexual and psychological abuse (such as the significant abuse of power arising from a dependent relationship, threats, intimidation and neglect).

Analysis of NBT on Raj Thakerey's issue:

Analysis of  NBT (Navbharat Times) of the dates 21st to 22th August, 2012 :

The ‘Navbharat Time is the sister paper of The Times of India. Navbharat Times is basically a newspaper that has mainly gained grounds in the Northern states of India.
The aim of this analysis is to find out how the functioning of the newspaper takes place and also the qualitative and the quantitative analysis of NBT. This is an analysis of a news published continuously for five consecutive days.  The news is about Mr. Raj Thakerey and his rally against the attack on 11th August, 2012 at CST.

The analysis is on the following components:

1.Qualitative Analysis:
2. Quantitative Analysis:

21st August 2012:

On the 21st of Aug, the news published against the permission denied for Raj Thakerey’s rally was placed on the right hand side of NBT as the 2nd lead story.
This was a story which is 10.5 long and consists of 4 columns on the right end
The news is above fold which shows that the news is of great importance.
This news says, even if permission is denied the rally would still take place as said by Mr, Raj. Also the ethical issue that comes into picture is, influencing the north Indians by such news i.e talking in terms of what Mr.Raj does! NBT being the sister newspaper of The Times Of  India is in great favor of the North and it’s issues are all the more related in favour of the North Indians whereas that is not the case with Times Of India. The news of Mr.Raj’s rally on 21st said that this rally is for asking the resignation of Home Minister R.R.Patil and a police commissioner Aroop Patnakar. The quantity of the news here is not much and gives only the required information that a reader might search for in a newspaper. The source of the news is NBT and the byline given is: By a Special Correspondent. The layout of the news is very subtle and describes the entire scenario with the help of the images. The picture used to support the news is very apt and marks great significance. The image used on 21st is of Mr.Raj and there is a quote given by him supporting the photograph. The news that was published also stated that there were 35 thousand members of MNS who were a part of the rally. Now this shows that Mr. Raj wants to show his power and his rule over Maharashtra.

22 nd August:

The news published on the next day that is on 22nd August 2012 was a 7 column news stretching from the left to the extreme right. The news talks about how Mr. Raj says that he belongs to only Maharahstra and Maharashtra is his concern, not Hindutva.
The news article on this date tells us what Raj said at the rally at Azad Maidan. The news is published above the fold. His speech lasted for nearly 15 minutes where he spoke about Dalit leaders, Muslims and people who come from  outside the state. The quantity of the news here is more as compared to the news published on other days. The size of the news was 22cm long and was of 5 columns. The byline given is of a Senior correspondent of NBT. The quality of the news  goes on deteriorating as the news gets older.
In these news of two days, the news differs from just being a simple news to a violent news. One the first day it is normal but on the second day it talks about Dalits, Muslims and people comming from outside the state. This again comes in ethics as to such violent news should be published or no. The layout is promotional here (there are borders for the news that defines that it is an important issue to be read, also the news is supported with an image of thousands of people who had come for the rally waving MNS flags at Azad Maidan. This makes the news catchy and people get attracted towards it. When people look at the image of the crowd they get a feeling that the news is something really serious and these are the tactics to attract readers. This is again unethical and biased on the part of the news agency to draw readers towards them. Also the news published on 22nd comprise of quotes by leaders of different parties like there are quotes from R.R.Patil- the Home Minister of Maharashtra, Aroop Patnayak- The Commissioner of Mumbai,  Ramdas Aathavle - RPI leader and Abu Azmi who is the state president of Maharashtra Samajwadi Party. All of these leaders warned Mr.Raj for not getting into topics which would hurt any community.

“Khamoshi and Guzarish”- THE TWO EPICS

A shot from Guzarish

A shot from guzarish

A shot from Khamoshi
These two movies portray life of the disabled human beings with varying degree of success. ‘Khamoshi’ tells us about deaf-mute parents who communicate in musical terms with their grownup daughter. These two films Hindi films convey an extreme emotion,  positive as well as negative, funny and  sad. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, paints a beautiful picture of how a disabled person can enjoy life with whatever they are blessed with and not sit and crib.  Though the stories are ordinary enough, they bring in a great deal of satisfaction for someone who watch the film.
Khamoshi: The Musical in 1996, about a daughter's struggle to communicate with her deaf-mute parents.. The much talked about Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Guzarish”, a story of a quadriplegic ex magician raises some ethical questions about euthanasia.
From his first venture Khamoshi, where Mr Bhansali had Manisha Koirala playing a mute person, he  has focused on stories revolving around disabled people.
“Guzarish” may be another attempt to repeat another story of a disabled person’s plight and the challenges that such an individual faces on a daily basis.

Graphics help in communicating in a better manner:

Be it an incident of bomb- blast in Mumbai, terror attacks or for that matter J. Dey’s death case, every issue of  mentioned above can be well demonstrated with illustration and graphics. Now here comes the question as to how do they help in communicating in a better manner than merely an image supporting the article. The answer being, when a common man who is illiterate, who can’t read and write; with the help of illustrations and graphics can figure out what exactly has happened.

If talking about the bomb- blast:
One can easily give a graphical representation of the series of bomb-blast by showing a train and the signs which show that a bomb-blast has occurred!

These are graphical representations

If taking an example of a train which got derailed:
One can show a train and a track which shows a train running out of track! So with this, any common lay man can understand what has happened. But if there is no graphical representation and only a picture showing a train, one can’t understand what exactly has happened! While talking about the bomb-blast we can show the series of bomb-blast that took place with numbers like 1, 2,3 4, 5, 6 along with the representation.
This helps in understanding the incident  pretty well.

To quote from Sanctuary's post of this Ad..

This advertisement states that, "Cut something else for a Change" which means that instead of cutting a tree for the advertisement, it is better if we start cutting something else and save trees!

To quote from Sanctuary's post of this Ad..
"It's time that some of Mumbai's hoardings were hacked to make way for trees, not the other way around."

To repeat
Peter Griffinreaction to this...
"I think that I shall never see
A billboard lovely as a tree
Indeed, unless the billboards fall
I'll never see a tree at all

Karma!!

Karma is the only one thing that can help you survive in this entire universe!!
your karma determines how your future generations might be. This may sound a bit Weird but that how it is!!
This world is full of jealously, hatred, love, ego, sarcasm and what not!!
Inorder to make your generation good and well to do off, you need to start doing good things.. Now good things can be innumerous! But what do you exactly need to do... This would be the things popping into your minds now!! Ok.. So let me tell you, As per the Sacred  Bhagvad Geeta, your karma determines what you would be in the next generation.. That directly tells us that people who are well- known today must have done something good in their last birth.. Also, there should be satisfaction of mind and soul both which you would only get if you help people, make someone happy and do atleast a bit of thing that would bring someone happiness!! What you do comes back to you in some or the other form!! When you help someone, you get inner satisfaction; now this satisfaction you will not get anywhere else but in helping.. /
Never think that what if people don't help you when you need them.. Go on helping and Gods will always have someone to help you out and help you when you are in dire need!!  Open your eyes and see the world! Live in Reality! Sometimes you just have to take off the blinders and open your eyes!
